Book Two of the Cuhulaiin Chronicles This is an original work, please do not steal. Old enemies return, genocide looms on the horizon, a young half-blood will give everything he has to protect his family, and a young girl will give her life to fulfill a contract made before her birth. Dragonseeker picks up where its sequel leaves off. Eleven years after events in The Morretain Prince, the royal family attends the supposed funeral of the elven queen Kieren. Unbeknownst to her family, Kieren has fled the kingdom with the bard Talfryn, forced to abandon her husband and children due to a warning the bard received from the Morraugh gods. Meanwhile, in grief over her mother, Eryn has an “outburst”—an uncontrollable eruption of power that destroys everything in her path and injures her brother, Elerosse. Their father, the human King Elemmire, chastises her for her lack of control. The night of the funeral, Elerosse, falls ill—something unheard of for a half-elf. In his fevered state, three visions attack his mind. The first is of a gray field, littered with the dead and dying, though no wounds stain the ground. Next, he is visited by his two older cousins—Aydin and Aiya—whom he has not seen since they, and their mother Laerwen, were banished for attempting to kill him eleven years ago. Finally, a ghostly specter of Kieren comes to him with a warning about Eryn, telling him that her life is in danger and to stand by her, no matter what happens. When Elerosse tells his father about the visions, Elemmire grows angry and denies the possibility that Kieren may still be alive. Eryn, however, believes him, and the siblings make plans to ask the seer Mireleth for help. That night, Elemmire confronts Eryn, blaming her for her mother’s death. He attacks the eleven year old and nearly kills her. Elerosse arrives, subdues his father, and escapes the castle with his injured sister in tow. Due to her half-elven heritage, she heals quickly, but still needs to rely on her brother to get them out of the Cuhulaiin valley before their father or his armies find them. During their second day of travel, they come across the charred corpse of a giant. From beneath the massive cadaver, Eryn finds a wounded baby dragon. She nurses the injured animal back to health and names her Maera. Despite Elerosse’s protests, Eryn brings the dragonet with them. Just as Elerosse and Eryn are about to leave the valley, Elemmire and Vidarr, the Captain of the Guards, find the missing children. Elemmire subdues Vidarr and tries to kill Elerosse and Eryn. It’s only through the boy’s quick thinking and Maera’s intervention that they escape with their lives. They head for Vainamon, home of their godfather, Dagrun. Back home, Elemmire is at a loss to explain why he attacked his son and daughter. The truth is revealed when the incorporeal form of Laerwen appears before him. She reminds Elemmire of the war between their races and how the humans massacred her kind. In revenge, she plans to murder all humans. To do so, she slowly possessed Elemmire’s body via his dreams. She takes complete control of his actions and speech, leaving Elemmire a helpless puppet as the elf witch researches an ancient plague spell. She gathers her ingredients, prepares the spell, and murders the king’s advisor. After the spell is cast, Laerwen releases her hold on Elemmire, claiming more work must be done to satisfy her thirst for revenge. Elemmire is then put under arrest by Vidarr, for counts of murder and treason against the crown prince and princess. Elemmire escapes and vows to find his children and save his people, or die trying. Meanwhile, Elerosse and Eryn arrive at the human settlement of Terin where Eryn is nearly killed by a runaway stallion. The siblings meet Leda, a young woman who appears to be another morretain—half-elf, half-human. Before they have the chance to question her, Elerosse becomes a competitor in the apolia: a winner-take-all horse race with few survivors. After a hard-won race, Elerosse becomes a local hero in the town. The next morning, he, Leda, and Eryn go to the marketplace to stock up on supplies for the remainder of their journey. Eryn, who disliked Leda the moment they met, discovers the girl shoplifting. She tries to tell her brother, but Elerosse is smitten by Leda’s charms and ignores his sister. Eryn decides to take matters into her own hands by catch Leda in the act. The plan backfires, and Eryn takes the fall. The townspeople discover her half-blood status and decide to burn her at the stake. Terrified, Eryn finds the strength to control her powers for the first time in her life, yet is still mortally wounded. Maera saves Eryn’s life, and Elerosse begins to suspect there is more to Eryn’s little foundling that he’d previous thought. While escaping from the castle, Elemmire stumbles across an elven army marching towards Cuhulaiin, led by Aydin. Torn between finding a cure for the Deathfever, protecting his children, and saving his people, Elemmire is captured by the army and made to watch as Aydin’s forces lay siege to Cuhulaiin. The army sets fire to the outer wall and kill any they find in their path. Unaware of events at home, Elerosse, Eryn, and Leda arrive in Vainamon, where they are reunited with their mother. Kieren has been researching the Morraugh’s warnings, but all evidence points to the same conclusion. With that in mind, she tells Eryn the true story of her birth, including the bargain Kieren made with the Gods—a contract to save the young Elerosse’s life in exchange for Eryn’s soul. Eryn refuses to be used as a pawn by the Gods, but is told that as soon as she comes into her powers, she’ll have no choice. She realizes that the process has already begun and that somehow, her little dragon is responsible for it. Maera shows Eryn images of a coming war—elf slaying elf, citizens dead and dying, and the complete destruction of her homeland. Knowing that going back will mean her own death, Eryn convinces her mother and brother to return to Cuhulaiin, but keeps the knowledge about her fate to herself. En route back home, Elerosse, Eryn, and company are “ambushed” by Aiya. Bitter towards his brother and mother’s insanity, he offers to help by bringing them to the palace at Amacernon where Laerwen is. Eryn battles Laerwen’s powers and is nearly destroyed, but Maera helps her center the outburst and use it to destroy the wards protecting Laerwen’s body. Laerwen’s husband, Javad, kills the witch’s body, trapping her spirit in its current host’s body. Back in Cuhulaiin, the plague claims more and more human lives. Having claimed the throne, Aydin finds a way to tap into the deeper powers and then changes the plan, murdering the host body housing his mother’s spirit so he alone will rule. Unknown to him, Laerwen’s spirit escapes and travels into the nearest living vessel—the captured Elemmire. To fight the elven occupation, Vidarr rallies an underground resistance, determined to kill Aydin and eliminate the threat of elves once and for all. The campaign is a failure and Vidarr is sentenced for death—a public hanging in the castle’s bailey where everyone can see the price for disobedience of the new order, according to Aydin. Vidarr refuses Aydin’s last chance offer to help him find Elerosse and Eryn. Just as Aydin pulls the level to release the gallows’ door, Elerosse arrives. He frees Vidarr and challenges his cousin for the crown. Aydin bewitches his army to obey him and not the true heir, then sets the mindless elves to battle while Aydin flees. Elerosse leaves the battle to search for his father. He finds Elemmire in a cage suspended from the ceiling in the grand hall. Elerosse frees him, but is then captured by Laerwen, who is possessing his father’s body. Laerwen brings him to the bailey and orders the alliance to drop their weapons. Vidarr surprises her, giving Elerosse the chance to escape. He battles her, knowing that the only way to end the Deathfever and break the enchantment over the army is to kill her…even if it means killing his own father. Meanwhile, Eryn run away from Leda and succumbs to the power that has been building within her ever since she first met Maera. She Calls forth the forces of the earth, which appear to her in dragon form. Eryn commands them to heal the land by burning away the sickness and destruction and help the earth renew. The act leaves her exhausted. The Morraugh Gods arrive and claim Eryn, saying that since her powers are now in control, they can collect on the bargain Kieren made before Eryn’s birth. Eryn fights them, refusing to go with them. The Gods say that either she comes willingly, or they will renege the terms of the contract and Elerosse would die, like he was meant to eleven years ago. Eryn has no choice but to fulfill her part in the bargain. As Eryn accepts the Morraugh’s will, the battle rages on. Laerwen is winning. She injures Elerosse, then moves in for the kill. Elemmire refuses to let the witch hurt his son and wages an internal attack on Laerwen, regaining temporary control over his mind and body. Wounded from all he has endured, he begs Elerosse to kill him to make sure Laerwen can never harm anyone ever again. Horrified, Elerosse obeys and slays his own father, ending the battle and freeing the land of Laerwen’s influence once and for all. Dawn comes, bringing an unease peace as the survivors start to reassemble their lives. Weary of fighting and death and sick over what he was forced to do, the newly-crowned King Elerosse mourns in private. Leda finds him and comforts him. He finally tells her that he loves her, but she pushes him away. Refusing to loose her, Elerosse asks Leda to marry him. She promises to think about it and give him an answer in the morning. That night, Aydin returns. Unwilling to admit defeat, he creeps into Leda’s bedchamber. He casts several spells on her, then pours a potion down her throat. She fights him, but he defeats her. Aydin tells Leda that he will turn her into a vessel to house his deceased mother’s powers and use her to kill his enemies once she is strong enough. Using another spell, Aydin disappears from Cuhulaiin with Leda in tow. Come sunrise, Elerosse assumes Leda’s absence is her answer and turns his heart towards restoring his kingdom. In shock from losing a husband and daughter in one day, Kieren leaves with Dagrun, hoping to find healing someplace away from her memories. Alone, Elerosse refuses to believe his sister is dead and swears to keep searching for her, just as he promises his people to see them flourish as a kingdom once more. ![]() |
